暮投郑人宿。

他乡绝俦侣。

孤客亲僮仆。

宛洛望不见。

秋霖晦平陆。

田父草际归。

村童雨中牧。

主人东皋上。

时稼绕茅屋。

虫思机杼悲。

雀喧禾黍熟。

明当渡京水。

昨晚犹金谷。

此去欲何言。

穷边徇微禄。

 

Stopping at Zhengzhou

 

I left the folk of Zhou in the morn,

And seek a shelter at Zheng by the eve,

Away from home, how sadly forlorn!

I smile to my page some comfort to retrieve.

We look for Nanyang and Luoyang in vain,

Continuous raining has blurred the plain.

Some ploughmen are wading through grass for home,

But herd-boys seem unaffected i’th’ rain.

The host at the moment is still in the field,

His cottage sits ’mong farm plants around.

‘Mid insects’ wails the looms go clacking;

And sparrows twitt’ ring, ripe crops abound.

Tomorrow I have to cross another stream

Still further from the land of Zhou of yestreen.

But why am I moving like this?—I deem

It in regions remote to have a purse lean.
