On Vice-prefect Yan and Others Visiting Me in Late Spring

Though my garden’s a waste, the pines and flowers are fair,

And my library keeps whole cartloads of great works there.

These greens are special for you distinguished guests,

Whose visit how with grace my lodge invests!

The magpie starts to brood before spring’s green,

And the oriole sings till after flowers go lean.

Since evening hours have turned my hair so grey,

I, too, must make the hour do the work of a day.
