To the Orange
Qu Yuan Heaven and earth have brought forth a noble tree—the orange, destined to grace this southern land. Deeply rooted, single-hearted, it is not to be moved. How it thrives here! Such verdant foliage spangled with snowy blossoms, a delight to the eye! Anon it bears fruit: glittering globes of green and gold on branches armed with spines; brilliant without, pure within, genial yet guarded, telling of a righteous life. A thousand charms it has, which nothing can mar. You—even as a sapling you were out of the common. It is gratifying that you have grown up to be independent and steadfast, striking root ever deeper in your native soil. You have cultivated a liberal mind, sober amidst universal intoxication, never swayed by vulgar prejudices, never tempted by selfish desire into wrong. Holding firm to virtue and justice, you are one with heaven and earth.
All else may pass away; let this kinship endure. O! youthful beauty, so temperate, upright and disciplined, you are the mentor. O! loyalty incarnate, example immortal, you will be constant inspiration to an aspiring soul.
