The Riverside Land

Qiao Ji

I ask people by the riverside why

Mume trees are not

Planted near by.

The trunk of old mume tree is used to support the door,

Wild weeds are overgrown along the shore.

Dreary is the bamboo-fenced cot.

On the roof of the godless temple foxes trot;

Officials doing nothing let rats run in the hall.

Around the yellow sand white water flows.

Leaning on the balustrade, I count all

The crying crows.
