What Children Must Know

夫童蒙之学，始于衣服冠履，次及言语步趋，次及洒扫涓洁，次及读书写文字，及有杂细事宜。皆所当知。今逐条列名，曰《童蒙须知》。

Children’s education is acquired successively from the knowledge of clothes, hats, shoes, talking, walking, sanitation, hygiene, reading, handwriting, and many trifles. All the things mentioned above are listed one by one as follows, which is called What Children Must Know.

若其修身治心、事亲接物，与夫穷理尽性之要，自有圣贤典训，昭然可考。当次第晓，兹不复详著云。

As for the matters such as self-cultivation, ideological progress, waiting upon family members like parents, the ways of getting along with people, probing into and understanding the whys and features of various things, many sages of the past have left us norms in their instructions, which can be clearly known through studies, and is no longer necessary for me to repeat in detail.
