凡是人，皆须爱，天同覆，地同载。

All human being

Need each other’s love and care.

Because it is the same sky overhead

And the same earth underfoot that they share.

 

行高者，名自高，人所重，非貌高。

 

Those who are virtuous

Have a big name or a good reputation naturally.

They are respected in society

No matter whether they are good-looking or ugly.

 

才大者，望自大，人所服，非言大。

 

Those who have great talent and ability

Are naturally of high prestige and great influence.

They can still secure others’ submission

No matter whether they have talked more.

 

己有能，勿自私，人所能，勿轻訾。

 

If you have great ability,

You shouldn’t be selfish and grudge others any help.

If others’ ability is great,

You shouldn’t belittle it through your gossip.

 

勿谄富，勿骄贫，勿厌故，勿喜新。

 

You shouldn’t toad to the rich

And look down on the poor—don’t be snobs.

You shouldn’t loathe your old friends

And only like the new ones—don’t be fickle in your affections.

 

人不闲，勿事搅，人不安，勿话扰。

 

When people are busy and fully engaged,

Don’t you trouble them with your own business.

When people are disturbed and unpeaceful,

Don’t you talk to them to add disturbance.

 

人有短，切莫揭，人有私，切莫说。

 

Others’ shortcomings and faults

Don’t you take up and unmask.

Others’ privacy and secret

Don’t you reveal in your talk.

 

[道人善，即是善，人知之，愈思勉。 

扬人恶，既是恶， 疾之甚，祸且作。]
