贫士养亲，

菽水承欢；

严父教子，

义方是训。

不为昭昭信节，

不为冥冥堕行。

勤，懿行也，

君子敏于德义，

世人则借勤以济其贪；

俭，美德也，

君子节于货财，

世人则假俭以饰其吝。

A poor person supports his parents well

With simple food and drink;

A strict father teaches his children well

By imposing rules and instructions

Do not make use of brightness

To show off your integrity,

Do not make use of darkness

To engage in wickedness.

Diligence is exemplary conduct,

Which is used by gentlemen

To build morality

But is borrowed by ordinary people

To satisfy their greed;

Thrift is an excellent virtue,

Which is used by gentlemen

To accumulate wealth

But is borrowed by ordinary people
