劝学（一）

天子重英豪，

文章教尔曹。

万般皆下品，

唯有读书高。

Emperors value outstanding figures,

And educate you with various writings.

The worth of all other pursuits is small,

Book reading excels all other careers.

劝学（二）

少小须勤学，

文章可立身。

满朝朱紫贵，

尽是读书人。

You must study hard at an early age,

Writings can help you live well in the world.

All high officials under emperors,

Are without exception scholars indeed.

劝学（三）

学问勤中得，

萤窗万卷书。

三冬今足用，

谁笑腹空虚？

Diligence is the sole source of learning,

Hardworking comes before being well-read.

Three year’s study gives you enough knowledge,
No one will laugh at your being stupid.

劝学（四）

自小多才学，

平生志气高。

别人怀宝剑，

我有笔如刀。

If a young man is able and well-read,

He can be ambitious throughout his life.

Other become officials with swordplay,

I do so with a pen as sharp as knife.

劝学（五）

朝为田舍郎，

暮登天子堂。

将相本无种，

男儿当自强。

A country boy early in the morning,

Can be high officials in the evening.

Successes are not determined by birth,

Real mean should be dependent on nothing.
