入观庭户知勤惰，
一出茶汤便见妻。
父老奔驰无孝子，
要知贤母儿衣。
入门休问荣枯事，
观看容颜便得知。
养儿代老，
积谷防饥。

A glimpse at the tea or soup
Made by a housewife
Is letting you see her in advance;
Only look at the courtyard,
And you will know
Whether a household is lazy or diligent.
Look at a child's clothes,
And you will know
Whether he has a capable mother;
If old parents still work hard,
They certainly have no filial children.
When you visit a family,
You need not ask how they are doing;
Observe their looks
And you will know everything.
Bring up your children for your late years,
Accumulate grain for possible famines.

常将有日思无日，
莫待无时想有时。
守己不贪终是稳，
利人所有定遭亏。
美酒饮当微醉候，
好花看到半开时。
当路莫栽荆棘树，
他年免挂子孙衣。
望于天，
必思己所为；
望于人，
必思己所施。
贪了牲禽的滋益，
必招性分的损；
占了人事的便宜，
必受天道的亏。

When you have something,
Often think of possible days
When you do not have it;
Do not wait until days
When you can only recall memories
Of having had it.
Guarding what belongs to you without greed
Can make you stable,
Coveting others' belongings
Can only bring you losses.
Good wine is most enjoyable
When slightly intoxicating,
Beautiful flowers are most admirable
When half in blossom.
Do not plant thistles and thorns
In people's way,
Which may well catch on the clothes
Of your own descendants.
When gazing at the sky,
You should think about what you have done;
When gazing at people,
You should think about
What you have given them.
You will suffer in your innermost being
When eating beasts and birds
To get nourishment;
If you grab advantages unfairly
From people and things,
You must receive heavenly punishment.
