君子于役，

不知其期。

曷至哉？

鸡栖于埘。

日之夕矣，

羊牛下来。

君子于役，

如之何勿思？

My Man is Away

My man’s away to serve the state,

I can’t anticipate

How long he will there stay,

Or when he’ll be home from so far away.

The sun is setting in the west,

The fowls are roosting in their nest,

The sheep and cattle come to rest.

To serve the state my man’s away.

How can I not think of him night and day?

Keep him from hunger and thirst, I pray.
