莫挟沾沾之见，

莫矜察察之言。

莫因逆耳拒忠诚，

莫听谀言巧谮。

莫学豪家折福，

莫从乐处戕生。

莫因失意辍精勤，

莫更逾闲败行。

Examining Oneself

—to the tune of Xi Jiang Yue

Gong Nanzhuang

Don’t be always satisfied with your own ideas,

Don’t be always sure that you are extremely wise,

Don’t reject the honesty in faithful and bitter talks,

Don’t believe the sweet flattering words and slanders.

Don’t learn from those cruel bullies to make your fate worse,

Don’t take animal lives to make yourself quite please.

Don’t stop working hard for your career when you meet setbacks,

And don’t either make your deeds against rules and laws.
