何物似前朝。

夜来明月，

依然相照，

还认楚宫腰。

金尊半掩琵琶恨，

旧谙为谁调。

翡翠楼前，

胭脂井畔，

魂与落花飘。

Wilting willows, frost all over Baling Bridge, ¹

What thing resembles that in the last dynasty?

At night the bright moon

Shines as before,

Still recognizing the slim waists of the Chu palace.²

The golden goblet half drowns the lute’s grief;

For whom shall I play the old tune?

In front of the emerald tower,

By the rouge well,

My soul drifts with the falling petals.

1. Baling Bridge stands near present-day Xi’an in Shaanxi province. 

2. King Ling of Chu (r. 540529 B.C.E.) was fond of slender waists in women.
