月圆空自长离别，

别离长自空圆月。

虫露泣残红，

红残泣露虫。  

竹敲风弄菊，

菊弄风敲竹，

愁夜一声秋，

秋声一夜愁。

The moon: full.

But lovers: apart.

His absence

Makes her miserable.

Dew falls.

Crickets chirp.

The candle burns down—

The burned down candle.

It weeps with the crickets,

It sheds tears with the dew.

 

The wind plays with the chrysanthemums,

Swinging their yellow heads

Rustling the bamboo thicket,

It blows and blows,

Brings misery

To autumn night.

Night passes away

With the wind’s moan.
