乘彩舫，

过莲塘，

棹歌惊起睡鸳鸯，

游女带花偎伴笑，

争窈窕，

竞折田荷遮晚照。

A bevy of girl excursionists:

Flower-bedecked, boisterous and gay—

Alarmed mandarin ducks with their songs,

As their picturesque boat ploughed its way.

They kept up their loud laughter, giggling;

Snuggle together, not for lack of space.

Rather, o’erflowing with energe,

Each displaying her feminine grace.

There was a scramble for lotus leaves.

Was it merely and solely for fun?

Or was it for an obvious need:

To keep their face off the setting sun?
