A Letter
to My Friend Gu Yanwu
The defects in your poems and in
your essays consist in the fact that one may detect an element of the influence
of Du Fu in the former and of Han Yu and Ouyang Xiu in the latter. With such
influence in your mind, you can hardly be free of certain dependence upon these
authors, and can never expect to make the summit in your literary creation.
