问曰:“恰恰用心时,若为安隐好?”师曰:“恰恰用心时,恰恰无心用。曲谭名相劳,直说无繁重。无心恰恰用,常用恰恰无。今说无心处,不与有心殊。”

When You
Are Not Concentrating, You Are Concentrating
A disciple asked Zen Master
Farong, “When I am thinking carefully, how can I hold that concentration in my
mind?” The Zen Master replied, “When you are concentrating, your mind is too
occupied to do anything. Complicated and circuitous discussions tire out both
the speaker and the listen. Simple and direct discourse avoids minute details
and repetitions. When you are not trying to concentrate, you can use your mind.
If you are always trying to concentrate, you have not really used your mind.
What I am saying is that not trying to concentrate is the same as thinking
carefully.”
