《古代寓言·养鸟》（中英对照）

海鸟止于鲁郊。鲁候御而觞之于庙，奏九韶以为乐，具太牢以为膳。鸟乃眩视忧悲，不敢食一脔，不敢饮一杯，三日而死。

——此以已养养鸟也，非以鸟养养鸟也。

The Bird Killed by Kindness

A sea-gull alighted in a suburb of the capital of Lu. The Marquis of Lu welcomed it and feasted it in the temple hall, ordering the best music and grandest sacrifices for it. But the bird remained in a daze, looking quite wretched, not daring to swallow a morsel of meat or a single cup of wine. And after three days it died.

This was entertaining the sea-gull as the Marquis of Lu liked to be entertained, not as a sea-gull likes to be entertained.
