On reed beds silkworms grow into corpulent cocoons.

Casually I ask the villagers of local ways,

And why after all their hard labour they still go hungry.

Tender leaves plucked off, the mulberry trees give scant shade;
On reed screens silkworms wriggle, among the mass of plump cocoons.
I turn to ask the villagers about their life and work—
Diligent as they are, why is there such widespread famine?
