无限伤心家国恨，长歌慷慨莫徘徊。

To a Friend

Qiu Jin

My native land, as far as eye can see,

Imparts an infinite sorrow to me.

So few statesmen of genius are born to us,

In these Divine States of ours, alas!

The Normads have so long shocked and invaded

This realm Yu saved from being inundated;

But a dormant dragon can in no way

Stir up a thunderstorm to end their sway!

Could I let my head turn gray and old, to wait

In an inert, nothing-doing state?

And let my Motherland be smothered in

The ashes of All-Consuming Conflagration?

A vast chagrin for home and country nigh

Lacerates my heart; still I would have

A patriot’s generous, effervescent love

Burst into song, and not just loll and delay.
