夜中不能寐,起坐弹鸣琴。 薄帷鉴明月,清风吹我襟。 孤鸿号外野,翔鸟鸣北林。 徘徊将何见,忧思独伤心。
Meditations Ruan

I
As
I stay awake until midnight, I
get up from the bed and play the lute. Through
the curtains comes the bright moonlight; The
gentle breeze is blowing at my suit. In
the wilderness shrieks the solitary swan; In
the northern woods screams the circling bird. What
do I see while I pace on and on? Alone
I’m sad for what I saw and heard.

I
Midnight,
and I can’t sleep. Sitting
up, I play upon my harp.
My
gauze curtains mirror the moonlight; a
fresh breeze, fluttering my sleeves.
The
lone swan cries, crossing the wilderness; birds
shriek, flying from the northern woods.
Pacing
the courtyard, pacing the courtyard, What
can I see?
Only
anxiety, fretting my heart.

Reflections Ruan
Ji
I
I
cannot sleep deep in the night; I
rise and sit to play my lute. Thin
curtains mirror the moon bright; Clear
breezes tug my lapels mute. A
lonely swan shrieks over the plain; Hovering
birds cry in north wood. What
do I see, pacing in vain? My
heart is grieved in solitude.
