咬得菜根香，

寻出孔颜乐。

富贵如刀兵戈矛，

稍放纵便销膏靡骨而不知；

贫贱如针砭药石，

一忧勤即砥节砺行而不觉。

A person who is content with

Plain tea and simple food

Can enjoy the kinds of pleasures

Like those of Confucius and Yanhui.

Poverty and humility

Can function as nourishing medicines:

They will build you up unawares

If you live a diligent life.

Wealth and nobility

Can function as dangerous weapons:

They will destroy you unawares

If you live an indulgent life.
